About The Author

Gerald W. Morton is currently an EMT-Intermediate with the Bristol, Virginia Lifesaving Crew.  He began his "second" career in emergency medical services after 30 years teaching English at the university level.  In 2005, he retired from Auburn University at Montgomery.  He then taught for two years at his alma mater, Emory & Henry College, where he held the position Visiting Professor of English.  He taught as adjunct instructor in the English Department at Appalachian State University during the fall semester 2007.  Prior to going to Auburn University at Montgomery, he spent two years at Winthrop College in South Carolina.  In addition to his undergraduate degree from Emory & Henry, he holds the MA in English from Georgia Southern College and the PhD from the University of Tennessee. When he retired from Auburn University at Montgomery, he held the position Distinguished Research Professor and was named Professor Emeritus.
During his academic career, Morton has taught advanced courses in creative writing, mythology, and seventeenth-century English literature.  He is the author of over a hundred publications and conference papers, many dealing with the history and literature of the English Civil War.  He is specifically noted for his work on Mildmay Fane, a minor Cavalier poet at the court of Charles I.  His books include the much referenced 'Wrestling to Rasslin’: Ancient Sport to American Spectacle, co-authored with Dr. George O’Brien, which was originally released by the Popular Press in 1985 and then republished in 2005 by the University of Wisconsin Press.  In 2004, Oklea Press published his Secrets of Success: Key Insights for Life’s Journey from the Great Western Myths.
Since turning his interest to trade publishing, Morton has explored a variety of types of fiction.  His fantasy novel Sword of Two Kings (New South Books) appeared in 2002.  In 2006, his Moonshine and Madness: An Appalachian Rhapsody was released by Inkwater Press.  His romance novel, Forever Sarah, was published by ArcheBooks in 2007.  Morton also has an interest in children’s literature and has short story, 'Backwards Boudreaux: The Story of a Mixed-up Mudbug,' available as an Amazon Short.
Although still writing, Morton has become involved as an EMS and firefighter volunteer in North Carolina and Virginia.  He is a nationally certified EMT-Intermediate, with Virginia and North Carolina certification as well.  He is employed as an advanced life support provider by the Bristol Lifesaving Crew.  He is a member of the Helton, NC Volunteer Ambulance Service and the Lansing, NC Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
Morton and  his wife JeDonne live in Ashe County, NC where they enjoy the rich culture of Appalachia.  They have five children between them; Kimberly, Katherine, Megan, Steven, and Nicholas; and two granddaughters, Megan and Kelsey.

Sarah smiled at her father.  His simple wisdom gleaned from a lifetime of a farm reminded her of how basic some things were to life.  For her, nothing was more simple than believing that a man whom she ultimately trusted would heal, even if doing so took time.
